Beekeeping Classes

Beekeeping classes for new beekeepers:

Classes will be two parts: a group instruction and discussion then direct work with bees or a hive.  Classes may be rescheduled due to bad weather. Registration is now open!

It is highly recomended that your order your bees and equipment before your class. 

Class: Introduction to Beekeeping - We will go through equipment, breeds, basic biology, hive locations and diseases. Then we will examine a nucleus hive and hive a 3lb package of bees.

Class: Spring Hive Managment - We will be working with hives at the educational facility. This is not just a lecture and hive opening like many bee classes. Protective veils are provided by request. Full jackets and gloves may be purchased or rented. Wear light colors and weather appropriate clothing.

We are working on an additional programs out of Liberty Hall, Kean University.

Summer and Fall Sessions will be offered in Somerville provided registration meets the required 6 person minimum.

Class: Introduction to Queen Rearing - We will go through equipment for rearing, testing for traits, breeds, queen and mating biology, record keeping, the Nicot System, and grafting. Presentation will include lecture, DVD, equipment display. We will also practice larvae grafting and marking. Download, print and pre-read the information packet before the day of the class. It will be emailed when you register. Food & Beverage Provided:

  • Morning: Coffee, Tea, Doughnuts, Bagels
  • Lunch: 6" Sandwich, Chips & Soda. Specify sandwich at registration.

4H Beekeeping Club - Somerset County and near by residents ages 7 - 19 are welcome to join our youth beekeeping club for free. The club meets in Bridgewater, NJ. Youth receive many hours of free education, personal growth and a chance to make new friends and crafts.
